My Top Tanning tips

The sun has got his hat on and were ready to tan!

“Tanning is a biological response to the exposure to ultraviolet radiation,” When UV rays hit our skin, we release melanocytes in our skin which produce melanin. Melanin acts as a protective shield against these rays.

This type of radiation causes mutations in the DNA—with the risk of causing cancer—and breaks down nutrients such as folic acid, responsible for making cells function well. It also damages collagen and other skin proteins, which increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. (You can reverse these affects with Microdermabrasion!)

We have the answer! Fake Tanning is the way forward.

You can fake tan in the salon or at home. At home you can use different types of self tan. There are so many on the market available in shops or online.

Types of Fake Tan at home

All products have a different developing time along with how to apply and come in a range of colours. Make sure you follow manufactures guidelines.

  • Liquid- applied with a mitt for even streak free tan
  • Mousse- lightweight and non sticky
  • Spray-  easy to apply and streak free
  • Shower- apply in or out of the shower. Some also wash off after one use.
  • Gradual tan- like a moisturiser you apply daily for a gradual looking tan

Tanning Tips: Before you tan, its best to exfoliate. It removes dead skin cells so your tan stays fresher and lasts longer. Make sure hair removal is done before your tan.

My favourite tanning products at home are:

Elemis Gradual Tan £39 or on a budget Dove Derma Spa £7.99

Spray Tanning at the salon

Along with your usual pre tan preparation, on the day wear loose clothing along with NO perfume, makeup or oils on your skin. Keep your skin hydrated with an oil free moisturiser to stop the tan from stripping.

Tanning Tips: The best day to have a spray tan is two days before your event eg Thursday for Saturday event.

During your appointment, your therapist will ask you what colour tan you want, along with all the pre treatment preparations and disposables you need to wear. You will be advised how long to leave the tan on for. There are so many on the market, rapid tan being the newest with a very quick developing time.
