Self employed survival guide for the hair and beauty professional

Creating a second stream of income can not only secure your days off but be a reliable source on days like today- a snow day. Read my self employed survival guide to find out ways to add extra income.

I woke up in foul mood. How in 2022, can the country come to a standstill over 5 inches of snow. Schools closed, kids at home, work from home for the employed, flights cancelled and salons closed. I understand if it’s dangerous near the public to leave or drive but shouldn’t the country be better equipped and prepared. Gritting the roads after inches of snow have fallen is a little too late.

But how can we be more prepared? I’m working from home today from my phone, sitting on my sofa next to my two kids. One child back to online learning like in lock down. I forgot to bring my laptop home from the salon, but I’m still able to create post from social media, create blog posts, like this, mark assignments from students, and generally promote our salon. I’ve even caught up with some washing, Netflix series and wrapped presents.

START

How can you create a second income? Whether you’re not in the industry and looking for additional income, training in hair or beauty to work mobile around your current job or situation can create anything from one client, £50 per week to one client per night at £250 per week. Imagine what an extra thousand pound a month could do for you?

ADVANCE

If you’re in the industry, adding additional services to what your clients would want, can add additional income for you and your business. you can add a more high-end facial treatment, or something different altogether. Be sure to survey your current clients to see what they would like and pay for. Once you have trained in this service, added it to your insurance, you can advertise for models at a discounted rate.

Already working? Over working? Working for little money? Increase your prices! Work smarter not harder. Increasing your prices by £3-5 per service, on an average of 5 clients per day, can increase your turnover by £25 or £600 per month. If a couple of clients no longer have your services for whatever reason, you have re made that income.

TEACH

The next step in your career? I get asked so much, how do I start my own courses? How do I teach people beauty? Its not a quick fix or money maker to educate people. Its about passing on the knowledge and for me, to change the industry standards. I’ve been in education for over 10 years working as a center for VTCT and offering short courses accredited. I’ve made a quick teacher training survival guide and small snippet of how to get into teaching and some of the main requirements.

So my snow day wasn’t wasted. We baked, made a snow man, made a few orders, marking, marketing and still had a stream of income. Moved appointments to alternative days to fill gaps, took some time with the kids (sometime you need to rest- it’s not all work and no play!)

completed my NVQ 2 and 3 Beauty Therapy with HBA several years ago but never went fully into beauty. I am now changing careers and want to return to the beauty industry.
As soon as I saw that Katie (owner of HBA) was offering career chats I arranged to speak with her. I know that Katie has had many years experience of running a successful beauty business and I have always found her approachable, very knowledgeable and also happy to share her knowledge (which a lot of people do not do!)
The career chat was amazing ! Katie asked me where I wanted my career to go and offered her advice and guidance around goal setting, learning opportunities and business knowledge. The chat provided me with a lot of information and opened my eyes to things that I had not thought of before.
I would thoroughly recommend anyone to book a career chat with Katie, you will not be disappointed. Angela 2021
